Mac Purdy began playing in junior high and high school progressing as one of the leaders in music programs throughout his region and the state of KY. He furthered his pursuit of the rudimental aspects of percussion by joining Southwind Drum and Bugle corps. in 1994 and moving to the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle corps. in 1995. While there he was awarded a World Championship title and a High Percussion award, as a member of the 1995 and 1996 snare line. Purdy also participated in the DCI individual snare competition placing 11th; competing two years later he placed 7th.
This entire time Purdy arranged and taught percussion for numerous drum corps. and high school music programs(ex. Blue Stars, Pioneer, Nite Express, Marion Cadets, McGavock High in TN, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and Daviess Co. High in KY, Palo Verde, Basic and Foothill High school in NV).
Mac has recently taught Foothill High School of Henderson, NV who is 2 time WGI Western Regional champs in Scholastic A class. In their first three attempts at WGI Finals in Dayton, Foothill has made finals in Scholastic A class each year. He currently teaches at Arbor View HS in Las Vegas.
Purdy also works in audio recording and sound design in the Las Vegas area. Purdy has studied percussion with Brian Mason, Brett Kuhn, Scott Kretzer, Mark Casey and Jason Koontz. Mac holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in audio production and sound design.
Native to Wichita, KS - Kyle currently lives in Las Vegas studying at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Kyle has performed extensively throughout his time at UNLV earning both principal positions and merits within his percussion area and can be heard on two recently released albums––“Lost Vegas” and “Ventanas” (Klavier 2013,14)––by the Grammy nominated UNLV Wind Orchestra under the direction of Thomas G. Leslie. While attending UNLV, Kyle has studied with Yamaha Artists Dean Gronemeier and Timothy Jones, Alex Stopa (Cirque Du Soliel/Las Vegas Philharmonic), Latin Percussion® Artist Kurt Rasmussen, and past Percussive Arts Society President Gary Cook. His opportunity to study with such an incredible gamut of pedagogues has proven to establish Kyle’s performing and teaching facilities in the world of percussion. Since arriving in Vegas in 2010, Kyle has performed for multiple entertainment companies and events throughout Las Vegas. Most notable are his performances with the multi-platinum rock group 311, Cirque Du Soleil’s One Night for One Drop, the Electric Daisy Carnival, and the annual Vegas Loves Brazil Festival. Kyle is an active performer for Vegas Vanguard Entertainment Drumline at the Hakkasan Nightclub in the MGM Grand Casino and other venues around Las Vegas. Internationally, Kyle has performed at the National Drum and Percussion Camp held by the Australia Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society; Kyle was privileged to share the stage with artists such as Jeff Moore, Ted Atkatz, Ben Toth, and many more.
Outside of the collegiate and performance scene, Kyle has proven himself in the educational vein of Las Vegas for nearly five years. In 2012, he accepted the Director of Percussion position at Shadow Ridge High School and his development of the previously struggling program has been recognized across the valley. Kyle has additionally consulted and assisted a number of marching percussion programs in Las Vegas as his association with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps has provided an opportunity to share a wealth of information important to the marching arts. Recently, Kyle was invited to the UK to consult with the Liberty Drum Corps of Northampton, England and is now to become a yearly consultant/clinician for subsequent DCUK seasons. This year, Kyle joins the Vegas Vanguard Percussion Theater staff as a Front Ensemble instructor for the 2014-15 Winter Guard International indoor percussion season.
Michaelangelo attended the Las Vegas Academy for his freshmen year of high school. Eventually, his musical interests evolved into his desire to learn how to play percussion instruments. Which lead to his decision to transfer to Sierra Vista High School to join the band program as a percussionist. The Band was under the direction of Philip Haines. During his time at Sierra Vista he ended up receiving a 3rd chair placement for the Nevada State Honor band top wind ensemble as well as a principal percussionist placement with the Nevada Allstate Wind Ensemble.
After high school Michaelangelo became heavily involved with marching percussion. After performing as a member with the Vegas Vanguard Percussion Theater for two years, he eventually ventured off into the world of Drum and Bugle Corps. He dedicated two of his winters to the Vegas Vanguard snare and tenor sections as well as two summers to the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps snareline. To conclude his marching percussion career as a marching member he aged out with the Terminus Atlanta Percussion Ensemble as a snare drummer.
He eventually began his current career as a percussion educator, arranger, transcriber and composer for various ensembles throughout the nation. Some of these more notable ensembles include Fusion Percussion from Tucson, AZ and Flowery Branch High School from Flowery Branch, GA. He has also worked with Palmetto Percussion (SC), Lanier High School (GA), Lambert High School (GA), North Forsyth High School (GA), Jefferson High School (GA), Decatur High School (GA), Hardin Valley Academy (TN), Powell High School (TN), Liberty High School (NV), Spring Valley High School (NV), Clark High School (NV)(currently), University of Tennessee in Knoxville (TN) and the University of Georgia in Athens (GA). Along the way, Michaelangelo has been a part of three world class marching ensembles as a marching member and educator.
Michaelangelo maintains an active teaching and writing schedule with a number of high schools across the nation and is currently a freelance performer in Las Vegas, NV. He joins the Vegas Vanguard staff as a tenor instructor for the 2014/2015 season.
Charles – David (C.D.) Young
Charles-David Young joined the Vegas Vanguard Staff in 2007 as a marching and visual tech. Currently C-D is the Director of the Las Vegas Student Leadership Clinic (LVSLC). As a graduate from The University of Nevada - Las Vegas (UNLV), he completed his undergraduate studies and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a focus in psychology.
Mr. Young is an accomplished musician and drum major. His musical background is in classical and jazz piano and the saxophone. Since 1999, he has dedicated his passion and skill to instructing, performing, and counseling the drum major position. His experiences as a drum major includes: two years for Silverado High School in Las Vegas, one year for the Las Vegas Honor Marching Band, and five years for University of Nevada, Las Vegas Star of Nevada Marching Band. C.D. earned his Drum Major Elite
Certification in 2000.
During the school year, Mr. Young hosts leadership clinics, adjudicates drum major auditions, and instructs marching bands for several different high schools throughout the Clark County School District. Since 2004, C-D has served as a director for Leadership camps in Arizona, California, and Nevada. CD returns to the Vegas Vanguard staff for his 8th season.
While attending Bloomington High School, Timothy Drake completed four years of Marching Band & color guard along with Wind Ensemble and Indoor Percussion competing in ADLA (American Drum Line Association) circuit. Shortly after graduation, he continued playing drum set at a local church in Fontana, California. Timothy then relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada where he decided to continue his music studies at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV)
Timothy currently is a member of the UNLV Star of Nevada Marching Band where he plays in the drumline on snare drum. He is also a member of the Vegas Vanguard Entertainment Drumline. Both ensembles are under the direction of Brian Howerton. Timothy joins Vegas Vanguard, Inc. as a cymbal instructor for the 2014/2015 season.
